Mesh-update procedures for ALE techniques in fluid structure interaction

One of the major difficulties in ALE description of fluid-structure interactions is,  knowing the displacement of the solid domain, how to update the fluid mesh.  If care is not taken, elements adjacent to the solid boundary can degenerate leading to computational problems and eventually to  the divergence of the solution process. In this presentation,  we will compare moving mesh methods such as kriging, unsteady extension, Laplacian smoothing, methods based on the solution of an elasticity problem,  etc. We will also consider a number of CFD test problems and compare the numerical solutions with those obtained using an immersed boundary method (IB) where a base mesh is locally modified in order to fit the boundary of the rigid object.
